Shopify Script Tags Stop Working on March 1, 2027: What Merchants Should Check

Shopify stops running script tags on storefronts on March 1, 2027. Learn what script tags are, how to find them on your store, and how app embeds replace them.

On March 1, 2027, Shopify stops injecting script tags into online store pages. Any feature that still loads through a script tag on that day stops working without an error message: a review widget disappears, a chat bubble is gone, a tracking script goes quiet, a subscription widget no longer appears on the product page.

Most merchants have never heard the term script tag, because script tags were designed to work without anyone touching the theme. This guide explains what they are, which dates matter, how to check your own store in a minute, and what to ask your app developers before the deadline.

What a script tag is

A script tag is a way for a Shopify app to load JavaScript on your storefront without editing your theme. When you installed the app, it registered a script URL with Shopify, and Shopify added that script to every page of your online store from then on.

That convenience is also the problem. Script tags do not appear in the theme editor, so merchants cannot see or switch them off. They keep loading after an app stops being useful, and they run outside the privacy controls Shopify built for customer events. Shopify's deprecation notice names these reasons directly.

Code that you or a developer pasted into theme.liquid or a section is not a script tag. It is part of your theme and is not affected by this change.

The dates that matter

  • August 26, 2026: script tags stopped running on the Order status page.
  • October 1, 2026: apps can no longer create or update script tags. This applies to every API version, so an app cannot avoid it by using an older one. Existing script tags keep running.
  • March 1, 2027: Shopify stops injecting script tags into storefronts.

The October change matters more than it looks. An app that still depends on a script tag cannot change that script tag anymore, even to fix a bug or move the file to a new address. Its only way forward is to move to the replacement.

What replaces script tags

Shopify offers two replacements.

App embed blocks load an app's script through a theme app extension. They appear in your theme editor under App embeds, where you can switch each one on or off. Review widgets, chat, popups, and most visible features move here.

Web pixels handle analytics and tracking. They run in a sandbox and respect customer privacy choices. Pixels that an app adds this way need no action from you.

There is an important catch for merchants. Shopify confirmed on its developer forum that apps cannot switch on app embeds for existing stores automatically. Even when your app developer has done everything right, someone on your side has to open the theme editor and turn the embed on.

How to find script tags on your store

The quickest way is our free Shopify Script Tag Checker. Enter your store address and it lists every script that Shopify injects through script tags, together with the app it belongs to when we recognize it. It reads only your public homepage and needs no login or app install.

You can also check manually:

  1. Open your storefront, right-click, and choose View page source.
  2. Search for asyncLoad. Shopify lists script tags inside a function with that name, in a line that starts with var urls.
  3. Each address in that list is one script tag. The domain usually tells you which app it comes from.

If the search finds nothing, your storefront has no script tags and the March 1 change will not remove anything.

When we tested a sample of live stores in October 2026, five of eight had at least one script tag. They came from reviews, subscriptions, fraud screening, advertising, and video apps. These are not rare edge cases.

What to do for each script tag

Work through the list one app at a time:

  1. Identify the app. Match the script's domain to an app under Settings, Apps. If you cannot find it, the app may already be uninstalled but its script tag still running. Contact the developer named on the domain or ask a developer to help.
  2. Ask the developer about app embeds. A short message is enough: "Your app loads through a script tag, which Shopify stops on March 1, 2027. Do you have an app embed I should switch on, and when will the script tag be removed?"
  3. Switch on the app embed. Go to Online Store, Themes, Customize, then App embeds in the left sidebar. Turn on the embed for the app and save. Check that the feature still appears on the storefront.
  4. Remove apps you no longer use. Uninstalling an app removes its script tags. It is the fastest way to shorten the list.
  5. Run the check again. Repeat until the list is empty or only contains scripts whose developers have confirmed a migration date before March 1, 2027.

Watch out for Canvas and duplicate themes

Shopify released Canvas, a new design surface, on October 1, 2026. At launch, Canvas does not support app blocks or app embeds, and themes edited in Canvas do not receive theme updates. If you are planning to move to Canvas, make sure the apps you depend on will still work there before March 1, 2027.

App embeds are saved per theme. When you publish a duplicate or a new theme, check App embeds in that theme as well. A feature can work in the old theme and disappear in the new one because its embed was never switched on.

For agencies and app developers

If you build custom apps or maintain stores for clients:

  • Use the scriptTags query to list the script tags your own app created. It keeps working after October 1, 2026, and so does scriptTagDelete, so you can clean up.
  • Move visible features into an app embed block in a theme app extension, and analytics into a web pixel extension.
  • Tell merchants exactly what to switch on and where. Shopify supports deep links that open the theme editor with your app embed ready to activate, which removes most of the friction.
  • Remove the old script tag once the embed is live, so the feature does not load twice.

Checklist

  • Run the Script Tag Checker on your live store.
  • Match every script to an app, or find out why it is still there.
  • Ask each developer about their app embed and their migration date.
  • Switch on app embeds in your published theme and in any theme you plan to publish.
  • Uninstall apps you no longer need.
  • Recheck the store until the list is empty.

If your list contains scripts you cannot place, custom scripts from a former developer, or apps whose developers are not responding, tell us about your store. Shopimaster can map every script tag, move custom scripts into theme code or web pixels, switch on the right app embeds, and test the storefront well before March 1, 2027.
